Q&A with Artist

Where do you work and how do you work?

I am fortunate enough to live in a house with a spacious studio and this has slowly becoming my working space as you get such good light in the day. Saying that, I find I work best through the evenings all the way till early hours of the Morning. Maybe because their is a sense of stillness, but I still have my music on. I like to paint with Acrylics simply because they dry quick and this allows me to layer. I'll always make a tea and I'll always forget about it until its as cold as a stone.

What do you listen to when you paint?

Depends on my mood completely. I am really enjoying electro sounds from Tame Impala and Foster The People of recent.

Favourite piece of Artwork?

Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich is a stand out to me because of its perspective. It captures a man on top of a cliff edge gripping his sword looking below at the World. Something about this piece has always caught my attention. I also appreciate the work of Tamara De Lempicka and the way she paints her way into a debutante lifestyle that she started so far away from.

What did you enjoy as a child?

I remember being really drawn to the Aardman Animations films that used stop-motion animation, the makers of Wallace & Gromit. The idea of creating a character and giving it a personality and making it move  from a lump of clay way absolutely fascinating to me. I remember writing to the founder, Nick Park when I was 12 asking If I could come and work for his team. I received an Autograph back and I remember it meaning the World to me.

Why Lana Del Rey?

So so many reasons. To name a few? I love the way she reinvented herself in her younger years and has now found ‘her own personal style’. I find her lyrics and her sound compelling and meaningful to me - and I will never forget the first time I caught glimpse of her ‘Born To Die’ Video which I will never quite forget as I had heard nothing like it before and it struck me on the spot. She also has this very endearing quality to her which I have never been able to pin point. And that is potentially the big question which has resulted in me painting her so many times. To see if I can pin-point that quality that I cannot seem to express in words.

Favorite Lana Del Rey Song?

A close tie between Born To Die and Radio - Radio reminds me of Summertime and the idea of everything going well. I really like the sound of her voice in that song.

What’s your scariest experience?

Driving on the right hand-side around Los Angeles for the first time in a brand new Dodge Challenge with 2 passengers.

Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?

Finding out about the loss of a friend to suicide was an extremely difficult thing for me to process. I was so confused and saddened by it all that I decide I wanted to go forward and take every opportunity I could to live a great life - and in doing so I have done a lot of things since then which have made me the person I am today. I like to think that he has contributed to this and I will never forget him.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I still am and have been many in many different occupations. I’ve been a bartender, an eye optician, and a wealth management administrator to name a few!

Why Art?

It has never been a conscious decision, some people read, write, play sports. My way of escaping the World is to be in the moment and paint. I’ve been painting and drawing ever since I can remember. The Internet has allowed me to share my Artwork and it is a privilege to have my work around the world - not to mention Lana Del Rey herself owning a edition of the ‘Cola' Artwork.

What’s most important to you?

Being around people that support what you do. Location is important too, moving out of the City and toward the Countryside was the best decision I have made. I suppose it comes down to knowing yourself well and what works for you. I also like to journal, I fully believe in writing your own narrative.

What is your artistic outlook on life?

I have now more than ever felt a real importance on following your own path. To live an authentic life is the only thing I am interest in doing right now.
